Along with this warm weather though also comes an increase in ticks. Ticks are an ever-increasing issue around Ontario and fearful of them we should be. It might still be few and far between that we actually find a worrisome tick but nonetheless, they are out there and we should definitely err on the side of caution. While the probability is low, it is possible to find an infected tick almost anywhere in Ontario. Ticks are most active in spring and summer but can be found at any time of the year when the temperature is above freezing.

What To Do To Keep Your Family Safe?

In our household, we always take a few minutes to check the children over after they have spent time outside. Something as simple as a quick look at them before bedtime or just as they go for a bath. We always have a little Tick Kit on hand as well. It comes in a cute little bright green pouch which makes it very easy to find in a pinch. There are little tweezers and two containers to secure the bug in should you send it away for testing. You can find these tick removal kits here.

Why Should we be concerned about ticks?

Most of us are not fans of anything creepy crawly. I admit, there are some people who love bugs but I would say it’s most common for people to fear them. This really is for a good reason, many bugs are a nuisance and many even carry disease. Ticks specifically can be a problem and it’s a problem that’s on increasing here in Ontario. Ticks can carry and transmit Lyme disease, a bacterial infection characterized by fatiguefeverheadaches, and a skin rash (Untreated, Lyme disease can spread through the body, affecting the heart, joints, and nervous system. It really is something we want to try hard to protect ourselves against!

However, It is important to note that being on the receiving end of a tick bite is by no means a guarantee that Lyme disease has been contracted. The chances of catching Lyme disease depend on a number of factors, including the type of tick that has been encountered and the length of time for which it was feeding.

Should I worry about ticks when at my photo session?

This is a great question. As you can see above and on my site, we often utilize the grassy areas for our sessions because these areas help to create beautiful photos. When I always suggest is to wear bug spray during your session. You can find some the Outdoor bug spray effective. Some people have had success with Essential Oil spray as well. After your session, I also encourage you to check yourself and your family to make sure you are free from any little critters. I have yet to have any issues during my sessions. However, just like going for a walk in the woods, or playing in your own backyard. Precautions should be taken.
